World Protection For Dogs And Cats In The Meat Trade
After two and half years of hard work, building our Chinese partner shelter from scratch, we have just received the devastating news that a 30 day demolition order has been issued by the Government. Some 400 dogs and cats cared for the by hero Mr Zhao are now in grave danger. The Beijing Government wants to ‘clean up’ the region, and no dogs are safe anymore.
We have put together an urgent plan of action and are appealing for the kind assistance of donors, to help put this into place. A new safe space has been located 90 miles away in the next province.
We are appealing for donations to assist with:
Deposit and advance rent for the new shelter
Workers to help the Construction
Connection of Electric and Water supplies
Basic shelters and sheds – the site is derelict
Basic food supplies
Transport of 400 dogs and cats in trucks
Livestock transport licences
Our form is simple and quick, and allows you to make a single donation of your choice
Mr Zhao and the other activists are extremely anxious as are we about the safety of the dogs and cats during the transport. There is a real danger that unscrupulous dog meat traders will find out about the mass evacuation and then intercept the trucks, using force and violence, as well as enlist corrupt police officers to seize the dogs. The meat traders have a lot to gain by selling 400 dogs into the meat trade especially as the move will be before Yulin. Our small team will travel over and help as much as we can and anyone with skills in building, animal welfare, veterinary who can volunteer please come forward.
We are appealing to animal lovers and the international community to help us ease Mr Zhao’s burdens with a donation towards this fraught and dangerous relocation mission.
If you are not set up to donate electronically, cheques can also be sent to World Protection For Dogs and Cats In The Meat Trade, 17 Cavendish Square, London, England W1G 0PH or to our USA address we can supply. Or you can phone us with your card + 44 207 873 2250
Thank you so much and bless your hearts for caring

On February 9th 2018 the Winter Olympics will open in PyeongChang, South Korea and run till February 25th. This means thousands of people from all over the word with visit the capital. Despite concerted action of activists participants will not choose animal welfare over sport and boycott this event. Our hope now is by lobbying them athletes who are attending they will speak out against the dog meat trade.
At the previous South Korean Olympics in 1988 the government ordered a temporary closure of restaurants leading people to believe very few people actually eat dog meat. This time however they have not intervened. is not as easy for them to whitewash over the truth since any google search of dog meat and Korea paints a very different story.
There had been a plan by local councils to give grants to restaurants who would remove the word dog meat from restaurant signage as well as images and even though we were told this plan had been pushed back many restaurants have removed the word anyway. This means tourists are likely to choose and eat dog meat without really knowing.
Our activist partners GAON who we worked with to help ban live slaughter of dogs at Moran Market will be holding a protest on February 9th as close to the open ceremony as they can.
We will be holding our own awareness event in Central London on February 10th. For more information on this please follow our social media pages.
GAON ( Dasom) have now taken their work to the field investigating and forcing closure through legal loopholes to dog farms and we continue to support them both financially and also through our network.
In the UK we have a new Minister for Asia, Mark Field, and whilst we were disappointed he was told it is just a few elderly people who still consume dog meat he will continue to push our concerns forward both in Korea and in China on his next official visits.
President Moon Jae-In owns a rescued dog himself and whilst he will not go so far as to say it wrong to eat dog meat he has been advocating more dog socialization parks and encouraging animal welfare provisions to be implemented. In fact animal welfare formed part of his presidential campaign. Having an ‘ official’ dog in his official residence sends out a message that change is needed. Unfortunately though education still needs to happen in Korea so that people recognise there is no distinction between ‘ meat dog’s’ and pets.
This year our team went to Crufts with our wonderful campaign dog Apache. Although we do not believe in buying dogs or cats in light of the fact there are so many homeless dogs in shelters, it was a great opportunity to meet some of the amazing suppliers of ethical products. We now run a partner shelter South of Beijing which is currently home to – at the last count – around 400 dogs and 36 cats and it is a huge task just to feed the dogs each month.
Our plan is to build a medical facility on-site for Mr Zhao set up and runs the shelter. We already have the 150 square metre structure so now we have a ‘wish list’ of items that we need to purchase or have donated to us. We are looking for letter writers who can help us obtain some of these items from their vets or local pet stores. One action you can take is to nominate us for a light therapy machine.
We still hope to meet with the Kennel Club on the global issue of dog breeding and puppy farms.
The Suffering of Abandoned Pedigrees in China
Coincidentally this month just recently nearly a dozen standard poodles were rescued by Mr Zhao complete with their pedigree certificate. They were no longer of use and being sold from the farms to the slaughterhouse. Just look how adorable they are.
We really need your help to cover their care and find them homes please donate urgently or get in touch to adopt.

Oliver was packed tightly in a truck bound for slaughter in the 40 degree heat which was intercepted as part of the #808 Tangshan rescue last year – a truck exactly like the ones who traffic the desperate strays and stolen pets to be slaughtered in Yulin. Often the stand off takes days and while activists and rescuers plead with the police to release the dogs many die from dehydration, too weak to continue. Disease is rife and in Oliver’s case although he tested negative for distemper he had a very serious chest infection and his own coughs could have broken his bones.
In the holding yard, Julia immediately bonded with Oliver, he was so gentle and sweet and despite his matted fur he weighed just a few kilos. It has taken months of care and treatment for him to regain his strength and but now he is a completely different dog to look at and ready to travel to his forever home in Europe.
Right now he is on a flight to Holland. At times like this we know we have truly saved one and not just left him in a yard ‘rescued but forgotten’ which makes our fight seem all the more worthwhile. NoToDogMeat Foundation takes each individual rescued dog seriously and we are pledge to stick with each of our dogs and cats to the end. This means we provide regular follow up with the yards who take them in and ensure they and their fellow rescued dogs receive high quality nutrition, vaccinations and love. Our long term plan to fund veterinary trucks, help improve small shelter conditions and to eradicate air-born virus relies on generous donations from people like yourself. Over the next few weeks we will show you how previous donations have been spent and offer you the chance to help care for the daily needs and offer forever homes to the lucky ones. Unpaid activists who stop trucks on the highway are real unsung heroes. We are here to empower them
After four years of actively campaigning against the dog and cat meat trade in Asia the whole world finally knows not just about Yulin but the barbaric way dogs and cats are brutalised for food and fur. Amazing Actors such as Orlando Bloom and Ricky Gervais have said ‘NoToDogMeat’ and although this year’s festival will still take place, we all hope it will be much smaller with tighter controls. Michael Tien, Hong Kong deputy to China’s legislature met with mainland officials and emphasised the issue of food safety, adding public inhumane slaughter was unacceptable. This will not mean the end of Yulin immediately but huge strides have been made.
In a few weeks Julia will be able update first hand on her own visit to the region but for now we can be encouraged by Oliver’s story rescued from a truck and on his way to his forever home. Just look how well he has done.
Over the last week the World has spoken out with a collective voice against the dog and cat meat trade. 11 million Signatures were collected and MP Robert Flello visited the Chinese embassy in person to try and deliver it and the same petition was handed to the authorities in China.
Yesterday NoToDogMeat UK held another demo outside the Chinese Embassy, Portland Place, London and this year we were able to bring our very own dog meat trade survivor Camille to protest with us. We were also joined by around 50 supporters and a reporter from the BBC. Passers by offered their support too.
NoToDogMeat USA, France and Mexico have also joined in the worldwide protest outside Chinese embassies.
International and local groups are on the ground in and around Yulin, stopping trucks, closing down slaughterhouses and alleviating suffering. And let’s not forget the activists throughout China who continue to stop trucks bound for slaughter.
This is a proud moment for the NoToDogMeat Foundation who started the global ‘say no to dog meat movement’ 4 years ago and were the first on the streets saying ‘No More Yulin Angels’.
We have been working to make sure rescuers have the equipment and support they need to save dogs and the ongoing support and care they need to find loving forever homes and change the hearts and minds of a society to accept that Cruelty is Not Cool.
We really want to thank you for all your kind support and ask you to continue donating to help the brave activists whose work will continue for many years to come.
We won’t stop until this ends and we can only do this empowering activists and rescuers on the ground with your help.
Other ways you can be involved.

For the last three years NoToDogMeat has been helping grassroots activists in
South Korea, China and Indonesia. We believe such activists will be the main engine for change in these countries and are encouraged to see the passion and dedication of an emerging number of such people.
Your donations to NoToDogMeat have been helping to :
- provide education and campaign material
- push for animal welfare laws and close legal loopholes
- lobby on their behalf in Governments
- facilitate rescue and rehoming of dogs saved from the cruel meat trade
In 2012 we started a petition to close the gruesome Moran Meat Market
in South Korea and in 2013 our official letter was presented to President Park Geun-hye during her state visit to London. In 2015 the issue of the dog meat tradewas debated in UK parliament and our charity officially thanked for its work.
Last year donors generously donated to help further our work in South Korea
Here is how some of the money has been spent in just the last few weeks:
- regular street stall campaigning in Seoul with our local partners at Cheongnyangni Station Square
- visits to Moran market in Seongnam to investigate the cruelty and slaughter, gain footage and speak directly to traders
- setting up a stray cat feeding point and organising a trap, neuter and release program for them
- rescuing four dogs needing urgent medical treatment.
We will be providing continued regular support in the months leading up to Bok Nal and are supporting other activists who are protesting the new cloning facility.
