Earlier today this long awaited statement was made by Mr Temjen Toy – Nagaland’s Chief Secretary “The State Government has decided to ban commercial import and trading of dogs, and dog markets, and also the sale of dog meat, both cooked and uncooked”.
This news follows on from the ground-breaking Animal Slaughter Bill passed in April 2020
It was Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio who was leading on this issue. We are very grateful to him. And a big thank you to all the people on our facebook page who retweeted our Tweets about dog meat to Indian officials last year and who signed our pledge, a copy of which we also sent to Nagaland officials last year.
We are especially grateful to the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations for their hard work lobbying the Nagaland Government over the last few years.
Now that India is officially dog meat free, it can only serve as a message to other countries to follow suit.
This law is a big step forward and could easily be recreated throughout Asia.
As part of our work in consultative status with the United Nations, we continue to push for new laws to further animal welfare and run education programmes. NoToDogMeat has been urging them since January in our petition to close all dog meat markets and end the live slaughter of animals.
